The Environmental Protection Research Institute of Light Industry*（EPRILI）was set up in 1979. It was originally under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Light Industry and subjected to the local administration (Beijing Academy of Science and Technology) during the national system reform in 1998.
Currently there are 110 employees in the institute, including 6 experts enjoying the government subsidy of the State Council, 5 experts with outstanding contribution at national or municipal level, 36 researchers and senior engineers. As China's first agencies for granting master's degree in environmental engineering, many postgraduates have been trained here, totaling more than 40 persons.
Up to now, EPRILI has gained certificates of “Environmental Impact Assessment ( grade A)”, “Environmental Engineering Design ( grade B )” and “Engineering Consultation ( grade C)” , it has now become an industrial oriented non-profit institute, providing technologies involving pollution control, monitoring and analysis and cleaner production for the city of Beijing. As early as 1984, the institute was approved by the Ministry of Education to have the qualification for granting master's degree in environmental engineering.
Since its founding, EPRILI has completed more than 100 scientific
research projects and won over 20 prizes for advanced science and technology at the national, provincial or ministerial levels. There are more than 60 mature technologies have widely used in the social and economic development. Its capabilities in research, innovation and technical service continue to improve and laboratory equipment reaches the advanced domestic level. Recently a number of laboratories have been set up successively, such as the Key Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology Resources Application, Water Pollution Control Laboratory, Analysis Laboratory and Energy Conservation Test Laboratory.
Now the following eight major research development areas have been established, all focusing on the hot and tough issues of the capital's ecological environment in the economic and social development:
Research and Application of Contaminated Soil Ecological Remediation Technology
Taking the microbial resources utilization as a core, to promote the research and application of integrated system of contaminated soil ecological remediation technology, mainly on microbial – plants and microbial – chemistry. Currently demonstration projects of bio-remediation technology mainly for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals are carried out in Beijing Coking Plant and Shilou Town in Fangshan District where the farmland has been contaminated by long-term sewage irrigation. As for the demonstration project of in situ bioremediation technology for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution in Beijing Coking Plant, its earthwork volume is 800 m³, and the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is up to over 70%.
Research and Application of Site Environmental Impact Assessment Method and Technical Standard
The Environmental Protection Research Institute of Light Industry was involved in the compiling work of the "Guidelines for Site Assessment" led by Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. Currently, it is engaged in the preparation of the relevant standards such as the "Technical Standards for Site Environment Quality Assessment " and the " Health Risk Assessment of Coking Industrial Site and Case Studies " for the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Its site environmental assessment technology has reached the leading domestic level.
New Technology Research and Project Development of Resources Comprehensive Utilization and the New Rural Construction
Based on the environmental engineering Microbiology and composting technology, the researchers have made a bold and innovative effort in solid waste disposal technology and turned the industrial and agricultural organic solid waste and wastewater into organic fertilizer synchronically with zero emission. The technology has been evaluated by the relevant experts as a miraculous one which has reached the advanced international level. Up to now, five large-scale organic fertilizer plants have been set up in Beijing, Hebei, Shandong and other places, through technical service and joint development.
Research and Application of Industrial and Urban Sewage Treatment Technology
The research area includes the sewage treatment, surface water eutrophication control and drinking water purification, with advanced technologies of high-efficiency anaerobic fermentation, suspended sludge blanket clarification and equipment of integrated internal
circular membrane coagulation reactor. Among the technologies, high-efficiency anaerobic fermentation is at the leading domestic level and has been applied successfully in dozens of projects in Pakistan, Vietnam and some domestic places of China, such as Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Guangxi and so on. As for the Dried Cassava Alcohol Wastewater Treatment Project of in Jinyuan Alcohol Company of Guiping City, Guangxi Province, the total volume of anaerobic tank is up to over 70 thousand m3, which is the largest one in China.

Beijing Beike Nenghuan Energy & Environment Corporation -- Taking energy audits, carbon audits, energy assessment, economy cycling and district planning, low-carbon technology research and development, energy conservation projects as its main business.
Beijing Zhongqing Kelin Center for Environmental Technology -—A wholly-owned and market oriented subsidiary of EPRILI, with qualificationon environment engineering design, engineering consultation and has undertaken a lot of large and medium-sized sewage treatment projects in the light industry.
Beijing Zhongqing Environment Laboratory Center — A multi-functional laboratory integrating scientific research and laboratory testing, engaged in the physical and chemical test of environmental samples, such as contaminated wastewater , gas, soil and groundwater contaminant test.
Circular Economy，Energy Conservation , Emission Reduction and New Material Development and Application
The institute is taking an active part in the promotion of the municipal energy conservation and emission reduction and involved in the preparation of regional circular economy plan and technical services, such as cleaner production consultation, energy conservation audits, as well as development and promotion of energy conservation technology. In addition, software for statistical analysis system of energy environment information has been developed recently.
Research and Application of Technologies in Cleaner Production Audit and Cleaner Production Reformation
The Cleaner Production Center of Light Industry is among the first national cleaner production audit experimental agencies approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. It has successively completed cleaner production audit consulting work for more than 40 enterprises and undertaken a number of environmental policy research projects, of them "China Industry Cleaner Production Standard System, Method and Case Study" has won a third prize for 2008 Environmental Protection Science and Technology Award.
Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental impact assessment is one of the major professional areas in the institute. It is the first market-oriented window, covering light industry, textile, chemical engineering, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry, machinery, electronics, municipal public works and other fields. The total number of accumulated projects of environmental impact assessments is nearly 1000, of them several dozens have got approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The Analysis Center was prepared to build up in 2008, covering an area of 300 m2 and equipped with more than 40 laboratory devices at advanced international level, such as AOX, GC-MS, high performance liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, with total assets over 30 million Yuan. All these provide perfect analytical test support for the research of the institute.
